Flow could be seen as a mother, a queen or a deity, influencing or embodying change, which, determined by outer or inner circumstances, can then turn into a stream. Trying to define this phenomenon, an important role is played by the verb to flow, which essentially represents an action, active being: it defines flow as constantly moving and ever-changing.
Daoists thought that existence is always changing and nothing is constant in the flow of life. The only constant is change. Just like water: always flowing and hence, ever-lasting and constant. Main elements of life in Daoism are not static or mechanic but, on the contrary, always dynamic, in movement, avoiding the prevailing routine and stagnancy. Daoist's flow is ever changing, formless, creatively limitless, full of energy and metamorphic.
Trying to clearly understand the meaning of a phenomenon, thing, action on your own being, compares to trying to define the flowing water; and the outcome is very ephemeral. The forced and unnatural defining of flow compares to death or stagnancy. Life needs a constant movement: repetitive, more intensive, always striving for renewal and becoming transcendent.
‘My Recital to Flow’ - is my own way of honouring flow as an artist. Separation from the world around you, concentration, meditation and being in the present moment were the main elements of this work. Uncovering the top layer of my work, I take the audience member through my own and her perspectives and understanding, which are not final but, on the contrary, ever changing and in always in process.
Throughout the performance, we witness a repetitive-meditative action of pouring sand from one palm into another; the past and future narrows down the focus of the present moment, in which the body and soul enter perfect balance and harmony. In the balanced and harmonious state, a human being sees every daily action as an important condition to his survival, which brings him to the sacral transformation. Such action awaken positive connection with the universe, at the same time demanding from the person an absolute ascesis. This understandings brings the person closer to the essence of ancient rituals, allowing them to see universal symbols and their messages in each thought, word and gesture and thus become one with the creator.
In this performance, forces of nature merge and human being is seen as a part of it; going from clouds into rain, from rain into sun, from fullness into emptiness and from emptiness into fulness. During this period of my life I am learning to let go off everything that I am trying to subconsciously hold onto. With every palm filled with sand, thoughts, feelings and emotions return to where they came from. Pouring of the sand cleanses hand, which desperately desire to hold onto time, people, relationships, and tries to stop that, which is destined to leave. Often used to having, we forget to let go. To let go equals to flow. Nature here is our greatest teacher: ever-changing, always letting go of the old and creating the new, at the same time repeating itself though the change of seasons. It is only us humans that get attached to the sun and try to avoid the rain, barely seeing that our souls need it the most.
